Press Release

May 18 - June 8, 2019

RECEPTION: SATURDAY, MAY 18, 6-9 PM

TAG Gallery is proud to announce the work of muralist Gus Harper as the focus of the second exhibition in our curatorial program. This program aims to foster camaderie between a wide range of artists through collabora-tion, curation and the exchange of ideas. The exhibition, TRANSFIGURATION, will be held from May 18th - June 8th in our South Gallery. A reception will be held on May 18th from 6-9 P M.

In January of this year, The New Earth Foundation commissioned Harper to paint a mural at a former detention center in Malibu. The center is currently closed while being transformed into a vocational center for at risk youth. Harper took the challenge and created his largest mural to date. Based on the idea of transfiguration and trans-formation, the mural spans 600 feet along the back interior wall of the former jail. Paintings inspired by sections of the mural will be on display at TAG in exhibition created by longtime TAG member, Fielden Harper.

One of Gus’s earliest art experiences was accompanying his mother while she painted a student mural on the Hollywood Freeway at the Vermont underpass under the direction of Kent Twitchell. Now Gus and Fielden have studios near one another and occasionally collaborate in their work. Included in the show will be one Fielden’s street scene paintings that depicts Gus’s mural at the 10 Freeway exit at Centinela.
