About
Kirk Campaña is a contemporary figurative artist whose enchantment with the human form is revealed in his abstract steel figures as well as his drawings and paintings. His fascination with the human body inspired him to attain a medical degree from UCLA and, subsequently, to practice urgent care medicine for over 30 years. Throughout his medical training and career, Kirk passionately studied art technique and 3D design principles with a particular focus on the study of the human figure. His formal art education included art studio courses at University of California, Berkeley, UCLA, Boise State University, and local community colleges throughout California. He now creates art full-time in his studio in Idaho. His weekly life-drawing sessions remain the artistic inspiration for his figurative sculptures. His sculptures and paintings have received awards in California, Idaho, and Oregon and can be found in private art collections in the United States and Europe.
Artist Statement
My goal is to create imagery that is both creative and authentic while revealing the beauty of the human figure. When studying the live model, I work with media that allow fast rendering on paper, such as pastels, charcoals, and watercolors. These works often become the source material for my abstract sculptures that describe a pose and its interior shapes using steel. I seek to construct lines and shapes in space that describe the figure yet constantly evolve as the viewer moves around the piece. Each sculpture features a rust patina or a color finish that best fulfills my vision for the work.
